| The Pilbara covers an area of 645,00 square kilometres, incorporating pastoral and mining communities together with coastal communities that have strong fishing and tourism industries. The mining industry of the Pilbara is one of the richest sources of exports in Australia. In the 2006 Census there were 41,001 persons usually resident in Pilbara (Statistical Division): 54.9% were males and 45.1% were females. Of the total population in Pilbara 13.7% were Indigenous persons, compared with 2.3% Indigenous persons in Australia. The main population centres of the Pilbara include Port Hedland, Karratha and Newman, with smaller communities located at Onslow, Tom Price and Paraburdoo. The main hospitals are situated at Karratha and Port Hedland. Smaller hospitals are located at Onslow, Newman, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Roebourne. There are remote area nursing posts in some of the smaller communities including marble Bar and Nullagine. The MANSmap questionnaire identified the models of maternity care operating at each unit. Standardised classification were used when describing maternity models of care as per the National Maternity Care Classification System (MaCCS).
