Clinical Engineering

Clinical Engineering

Clinical Engineering is responsible for services required for the selection, procurement, commissioning, maintenance, repair and the quality management of technologies used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

These services include:

  • Equipment Procurement and Quality Management, which is responsible for medical equipment asset management to ensure a high degree of equipment safety and reliability. Technical Services advises on the requirement for medical equipment procurement in accord with risk management principles and in support of budget submissions determined by individual hospitals and the Area Executive. The division is responsible for equipment specification, tender management and procurement strictly in compliance with standards and practices.

Quality management is controlled under MEPNet, in accordance with ISO 9001: 2015 (certification to 2020).

  • Biomedical Engineering services that have responsibility to deliver the safe and reliable operation of electro-medical equipment and surgical instrumentation. Biomedical Engineering Service units work directly with hospitals in maintaining medical equipment assets. The Service units are co-located with their respective hospitals and also work in support of the other Biomedical Engineering services. The Technical Services Division does not have a general responsibility for equipment at Fiona Stanley Hospital and St John of God Midland Public Hospital.

  • Clinical Engineering services work in support of the clinical staff to develop and implement new and innovative technologies applied directly in the care of the patient across the WA Health system. Clinical engineering solutions have routine significance in the delivery of complex medical systems to specialties such as Emergency Services, Intensive Care Unit, Cardiology, Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Transplantation services.

  • Medical ICT and Informatics, which is an evolving area of practice closely related to Clinical Engineering but requiring specialist skills in patient informatics and data management, Medical ICT and the performance of medical intranet services.

Clinical Engineering employs tertiary qualified Biomedical and Electronic Engineers, Technical Officers and Technical Assistants with specialist qualifications and experience.
