Emergency Centre WNHS at KEMH

The Emergency Centre is a dedicated 24/7 facility designed to deal with gynaecological emergencies or suspected gynaecological emergencies that require immediate attention. It is consultant led with medical staff supported by experienced midwives and nurses. Patients are triaged on arrival and are seen according to clinical urgency.

Clinical inclusion

  • Complications and suspected problems in early pregnancy that require immediate attention
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding requiring urgent intervention
  • Conditions that are suspected to have a gynaecological origin eg. abdominal pain due to ovarian pathology or infection
  • Post-operative emergencies / complications
  • Assessment and monitoring of women up to 6 weeks post-partum

Clinical exclusion

  • Pregnancies greater than 20 weeks:
  • Urgent conditions occurring during a pregnancy but unrelated to the pregnancy:
    • Please refer to a General Hospital Emergency Department
  • Non-urgent investigations relating to pregnancy:
    • For non-urgent early pregnancy assessment refer to an Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS) directly at the patient’s local maternity hospital
    • Joondalup Hospital, St John of God Midland Public Hospital, Fiona Stanley Hospital and Armadale Health Service all offer early pregnancy assessment services.
    • See KEMH EPAS clinic information for further details regarding GP referrals to Early Pregnancy Assessment Service.
  • Referrals for abortion:

Please refer to information available on Clinicians Assist WA website (external site) for GPs, and information on WNHS KEMH website on abortion care and pregnancy choices (including abortion) for consumers

  • Review to expedite outpatient appointment or scheduled surgery:

Please note the Emergency Centre staff have no facility to expedite Out Patient Appointments or scheduled surgery dates. If there are significant clinical changes which do not represent a medical emergency please send a new referral via Central Referral Service highlighting the change in condition. Contact the relevant managing medical team for advice if urgent review is required.

Referral to include

Referrals are not essential but we are happy to discuss and be alerted to patients that have been advised to attend.

All relevant investigations are useful for urgent care - blood group, beta hCG levels and ultrasound scan reports are especially useful. Please indicate if these are available on the patient’s MyHealthRecord to view.
