Preterm Birth Prevention Clinic

Role of service

This clinic at WNHS provides antenatal care for women at high risk of preterm birth in their current pregnancy, for women from across Western Australia.

Women will receive a specialist assessment and a management plan regarding recommended intervention, monitoring and most appropriate place for antenatal care and birth.

Clinical inclusion

• History of preterm birth prior to 34 weeks’ gestation.
• Uterine anomaly.
• Previous cervical cone biopsy or multiple LLETZ procedures.
• Perinatal loss between 16 and 24 weeks gestation.

Clinical exclusion

A history of medically initiated preterm birth (pre-eclampsia or fetal growth restriction) – depending on the severity these cases will be triaged to Maternal Fetal Medicine or General Obstetrics clinics.

Frequency of clinics

Weekly.

Referral to include

• Detailed past obstetric history.
• Detailed past gynaecological history.
• Copies of investigations and letters from other health services that have provided obstetric or gynaecological care in the past.
• Early referral to this service before 12 weeks’ gestation using the KEMH Antenatal referral Form (PDF).

Indicate Preterm Birth Prevention clinic and include required referral information.
