Diabetes Service

The Diabetes Service is a tertiary referral and resource centre for all women with diabetes (including gestational diabetes) that are pregnant or planning pregnancy and living anywhere within Western Australia, including Christmas and Cocos Islands. We have a multidisciplinary team approach to the care, education and management of women with diabetes during pregnancy. 

This state-wide service provides or makes available a variety of resources, specialist clinics including a Telehealth service, diabetes education and parent education programs for women and their families.

Our team includes: Specialist Obstetricians, Obstetric Physicians, Nurse Practitioner/ Midwife, Credentialed Diabetes Educators and Midwives, Dietitians, Social Workers. 

The Diabetes Service at KEMH offers:

  • Specialist high risk diabetes clinics for women with type 1/type 2 diabetes and a Nurse Practitioner led gestational diabetes clinic which all of which combine diabetes management and antenatal care.
  • Women with type1/type 2 diabetes planning pregnancy are encouraged to attend a pre-pregnancy clinic to help achieve optimal diabetes management prior to conception. 
  • Telehealth services are available for women living in rural and remote parts of Western Australia, including Christmas and Cocos Islands. This service enables women to remain close to home while receiving expert care in association with their local health care provider.
  • Phone in program to assist women manage their diabetes diet and medication to achieve good blood glucose control. 
  • Insulin pump management during pregnancy for women with type 1 diabetes
  • A Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) is available on loan for selected patients with diabetes.
  • Shared antenatal care for women on consultation with their local doctor. The pregnancy must be classified as low risk, both obstetrically and medically.
  • Inpatient diabetes education and management of antenatal and postnatal women and those admitted for gynaecological/oncology procedures.
