Professor Mary Steen recognised with OBE in Kings Birthday Honours
Congratulations to Professor Mary Steen, Professor of Midwifery at Women and Newborn Health Service’s Department of Nursing and Midwifery Education and Research, who was recently appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List.
Mary was recognised for her outstanding services to midwifery, maternal and familial health research.
She has a joint appointment with Curtin University as Professor of Midwifery and Discipline Lead in the School of Nursing.
Mary has made a significant contribution to advancing midwifery care, maternal well-being and perinatal health services throughout her 36 years of experience as a registered midwife. Her work spans service development, policy advocacy, education and research, including a patented cooling treatment for perineal trauma after childbirth.
Prior to joining North Metropolitan Health Service, she worked at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s in the UK whilst also holding a range of senior academic roles.
She has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, written and contributed to numerous books and holds visiting professorships at several international universities.
Mary said she was proud to be recognised with an OBE and enjoying her focus on innovative maternal and women’s research undertaken at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Osborne Park Hospital.
“I feel very honoured to receive this award and have loved continuing to help deliver excellent care to women, babies and their families at Women and Newborn Health Service.” Mary said.
